Abstract
This article aims to provide a general account on the life and deeds of Namık Pasha (1804-1892). Despite the fact that Namık Pasha played crucial roles in Ottoman diplomatic history of the 1830s and 1850s, and his services in Syria and Iraq to establish conditions for Tanzimat reforms, he has been virtually ignored by conventional modernist historiography. The fact that Namık Pasha was both a reformer and at the same time a religiously conservative person rendered him difficult to be assessed.
