Abstract

The mystery of the creation has always moved the human beings and as a result it has become the leading topic of various mythologies and religions from all over the world. The present article is based on the sacred texts of the two biggest monotheist faiths, the Bible and the Koran, and it is aimed at reconstructing the picture of the creation in its pure, unspoiled by post-factum commentaries form. The numerous parallels used in the course of the analysis confirm unequivocally the great similarity between these two revelations, and even more: compared to the already explored mythologies, the myths found in them proof to be exceedingly universal. The main possible reasons for the closeness between the Bible and the Koran are: (1) the socio-geographical environment they were born in is the same: namely the cradle of old civilizations called Middle East; (2) the languages of the originals belong to the same (Semitic) linguistic group and this fact leads to the impression that the personal names in the Koran are transcribed biblical names; (3) (from historical point of view) the period between the spread of the Bible as a canonical code in the 8th c. and the advent of the Koran in the 7th is relatively short. As for the phenomenon of acceptance and “reproduction” of older sacred texts, it can be observed in both revelations and raises the question for the character of the adoptions and the eventual existence of a common “prime source”. The main topics discussed in the subtitles of the paper are the following: Metaphysics and physics of the Word; Stages of the creation; The initial water-element; Longitude of the days from the creation; The “linguistic anthropomorphism” of the myth; Past, present and future of the universe; The “Preserved tablet” and the fatalism; The number 7. Throughout the text modern science and its concepts were used as a leitmotif. The different functions of Science and Religion, naturally determine the differentness of their “style” and approach to the events from the reality. Therefore the sacred texts should not be treated as scientific discourses; however this does not mean that they contain incorrect facts and disagree with the modern findings. The present paper proofs the opposite.
