Abstract
This article analyzes a set of archival documents from the Ottoman Ministry of the Interior located at the Prime Ministerial Ottoman Archives from 1894-1895. Here oppositional activities of students at the Diyarbakır High School, their worldview as reflected by witnesses, attitudes of the instructors, and the bureaucratic struggles within the Sublime Porte are elaborated. This article comes to the conclusions that 1.) Young Turk thoughts were rather influential among the educated youth in a remote provincial town such as Diyarbakır; 2.) oppositional activities were sometimes instigated by apparent Young Turks who probably were members of the secret police attached to Abdülhamid II; 3.) Arab and Turkish nationalisms clashed within the civil service; 4.) the Sublime Porte was apparently more autonomous from the autocracy of Abdülhamid II than previously thought.
