Abstract

This book elaborates the process of Ottoman educational modernization from the early nineteenth century onwards until the end of the reign of Abdülhamid II. The main thesis of this study is that we should understand Ottoman educational modernization not only in terms of Westernization, but rather in terms of Islamization. This study is a Turkish translation from its former English version titled "The Modernization of Public Education in the Ottoman Empire 1839-1908. Islamization, Autocracy, and Discipline" (Leiden: Brill, 2001).
