Abstract

The basic challenge in teaching, is to teach, including the teaching of mathematics, so that learning take place. There are further challenges in meeting the student needs that call for the development of methods to facilitate learning as well as teaching. Sustaining a learning environment is important. The 'Learning Center' that facilitates the the establishment of a healthy learning environment is an integral part of the student support system at Sabanci University. The model, in comparison to classical student support models, is based primarily on peer support, offers intervening activities and has a self-sustaining structure. Inspired by 'Peer Instruction' and active learning techniques, the model adopts several in-class teaching methods. The essence of achievement and the dynamics of the program rely upon student involvement at each organizational level and every stage of program activity, as well as transmission of acquired study skills among students. The scope is not restricted to learning mathematics, but also includes other fundamental disciplines. However, the cognition of mathematical concepts and problem solving skills form the core and develop good learning habits. Qualitative and quantitative assessments reveal affirmative results in terms of individual student accomplishment and the development of a learning community.
