"Woman"-in sound and in structure

Yoko Ono's work from the 1960s on, in New York, Tokyo, Kyoto, London and including the bed-ins in Amsterdam and Montreal, reflects her pioneering role in the world of avant-garde art that was taking shape right at that postwar moment where many artists, male and female, sought to give shape to their perceptions and conceptions of a changing world. Radicalism was ubiquitous, and its foremost expression in art began with challenging conventional exepectations around the identity of the artist, questioning the idea of talent and skill, interrogating the status of the art object, and using everyday materials to blur the boundaries between art and life. Ono's earliest works are an indication of how her approach anticipated the artistic conceptualism of the years to come.
