Abstract

The explosive growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) over the past few years has transformed data-driven applications across industries ranging from health and energy to agriculture and smart infrastructure and contributed substantially to attainment of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. With this rapid expansion, however, comes pressing challenges related to security, data privacy, and sustainable operation. This chapter adopts an interdisciplinary perspective to examine the intersection of IoT security, privacy, and communications sustainability. It brings together artificial intelligence- and machine learning-enabled threat detection, privacy-preserving frameworks like federated learning and blockchain, and energy-aware security protocols. Furthermore, it contextualizes these technologies within evolving regulatory landscapes and ethical expectations. Emphasis is placed on designing resilient IoT architectures that are resource-efficient, regulation-compliant, and aligned with societal values. By presenting real-world examples and identifying emerging research trajectories, the chapter provides a comprehensive roadmap for secure and sustainable IoT systems. The insights documented here aim to support informed decision-making for researchers, developers, and policymakers navigating the complexities of modern IoT ecosystems.
