Abstract

Supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors or electrochemical capacitors, are energy storage devices that bridge the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries. They are characterised by their ability to store and release energy rapidly, making them ideal for applications requiring quick bursts of power. Unlike traditional capacitors, supercapacitors utilise high surface area electrode materials and electrolytes to achieve significantly higher capacitance. Supercapacitors are increasingly being explored for their potential in a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics and electric vehicles to renewable energy systems and industrial power backup; their unique properties, such as high-power density, long cycle life, and fast charge/discharge capabilities, make them a promising alternative to batteries in specific timely applications. This Collection brings together original research on the development, characterisation, and application of supercapacitors. It focuses on advances in electrode materials, electrolyte formulations, and device architectures, as well as the integration of supercapacitors into practical systems. By highlighting the latest research and original approaches, this Collection aims to advance the understanding and utilisation of supercapacitors in modern technology.
