Abstract
Turn-milling is a multi-tasking machining operation offering several superiorities compared to conventional turning. The simultaneous rotation of tool and workpiece makes this process a combination of turning and milling resulting in several advantages especially for machining of difficult-to-cut alloys and complex parts such as higher productivity, better surface finish, and longer tool life compared to conventional turning. In this study, these advantages of the turn-milling process are studied in comparison to turning operations. In order to demonstrate them, several turning and turn-milling experiments are carried out using two different hard-to-cut alloys considering surface quality, machining time and machining cost. Finally, the orthogonal turn-milling parameters are determined for roughing and finishing operations with respect to minimum machining cost and machining time.
