Abstract

This book review evaluates Oliver Jens Schmitt's monograph titled "Levantiner. Lebenswelten und Identitaeten einer ethnokonfessionellen Gruppe im osmanischen Reich im 'langen 19.Jahrhundert'" (Munich: Oldenbourg Verlag, 2005). The review states the historical importance of the Levantines as a social group in late Ottoman urban life.
