Abstract

Formation of bacterial biofilms on material surfaces poses an important challenge for food, environmental, marine, and medical industries causing large costs in addition to important infection-related health issues. Coatings that are able to prevent biofilm formation or eradicate already-established biofilms provide an opportunity to harness problems associated with biofilms on surfaces. Antibiofilm coatings can be categorized as (1) coatings that are designed to prevent bacterial attachment on surfaces as a means to prevent biofilm formation, (2) coatings that interfere with the signaling mechanism responsible for formation of biofilms, and (3) coatings that are designed to eradicate already-established biofilms through physical or chemical ways. Here, the design, advantages, challenges, and application areas of different antibiofilm coatings are discussed focusing on their mechanism of action to fight biofilms.
