Abstract
This chapter focuses on the joint networked control problem for designing and operating a system with real-time constraints over a wireless network, employing simple, off-the-shelf, IEEE 802.11, and IEEE 802.15.4 radio technologies. It provides some background on wireless access, discusses various channel errors that occur in typical industrial settings, and presents the wireless networked control problem as an example wireless industrial application with real-time constraints. The chapter introduces the Wireless Model Based Predictive Networked Control System (WMBPNCS). It examines the performances of both the WMBPNCS and the basic wireless networked controlled system when operated using different wireless network technologies under various wireless channel conditions. IEEE 802.11 medium access control is based on the distributed coordination function, which provides collision avoidance and resolution mechanisms to coordinate the transmissions of wireless nodes. IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is proposed for low rate wireless networks with nodes with low computational resources, which is particularly suitable for low-cost industrial applications.
