Abstract

In an exploratory investigation into interface preferences among first responders, this study examines the usability of mobile and augmented reality (AR) interfaces among a mixed group of firefighters and paramedics. While prior studies predominantly assessed XR interfaces for civilian and single-domain user groups, this research is novel in its comparative analysis of two distinct professional groups. Through a combination of a 20-question survey and expert interviews, findings reveal a general preference for mobile interfaces over AR. Notably, firefighters highlighted the potential of AR when integrated into their protective gear, while paramedics leaned towards the practicality of mobile interfaces. This nuanced understanding of user needs underscores the importance of tailored technology solutions in emergency services.
