Abstract

Investigation of cutting temperature is one of the most important research areas in metal cutting since it is a significant factor that affects the tool life and the quality of the machined part. It is known that cutting temperatures in continuous cutting are higher than those in interrupted cutting. Including cutting and non-cutting periods provides the cutting tool to cool down in interrupted cutting. By means of this phenomenon, turn-milling can achieve higher material removal rates with less tool wear in turning operations. Turn-milling is an interrupted cutting process in which turning is performed by a milling tool. In this study, cutting temperature in turn-milling is modelled by using analytical expressions where cutting tool is considered as semi-infinite rectangular corner and the conduction problem is solved by using Green’s functions. In order to make a comparison between continuous cutting and interrupted cutting tool wear experiments were performed and the relationship between tool life and cutting temperature is revealed which shows that in turn-milling lower cutting temperatures are possible which in turns longer tool life compared to conventional turning. Additionally tool wear tests were repeated for different values of eccentricity in turn-milling and it is shown that increasing eccentricity improves the tool life due to lower cutting temperature.
