PREFACE Strategic potential and key role of natural gas sector in international politics and economy derive continuous development of natural gas related technologies. Rapid domestic and international growth of natural gas distribution networks necessitates fostering of training, application of novel techniques, collaboration to solve common problems and information exchange between sector players. To aid healthy growth of natural gas sector, “INGAS 2007 – 2nd International Symposium and Exhibition on Natural Gas Operations” aims to provide a platform for this desired information exchange. Even though it has been organized only once before, the symposium has gained truly international character with contributions from 13 different countries. In this proceedings book, apart from Turkey, you will find technical papers from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Britain, Canada, France, Holland, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and United States. There will be presentations from 9 different universities and 21 different sector players from all over the world. We expect this strong interest to grow continuously in the upcoming meetings to make INGAS symposium series a vital information and experience exchange portal for natural gas sector. Rather than being theoretical in nature, the contents of the papers in the proceedings are generally about technical issues, practical experiences, and legislative aspects concerning the sector. The first INGAS Symposium was organized under MEGEP Project with European Union and IGDAS support. This year, being one of the foremost gas distribution companies in the world (and the largest in Turkey), IGDAS is undertaking the symposium organization alone. Unlike the first symposium, there will be an accompanying exposition jointly with the symposium. We expect that the Natural Gas Exposition will enhance symposium’s mission to foster information exchange between participating sector players. Finally, we would like to thank IGDAS General Manager Mr. K. Levent TÜFEKÇİ and Steering Committee members for making this organization possible. Thanks are also due to Editorial Committee members who spent great efforts to bring this proceedings book to you in time for the symposium. We also extend our thanks to all others who contributed in organization and publication of the proceedings. Sincerely, Assoc. Prof. Mahmut F. AKŞİT Chair of INGAS 2007 Editorial Committee
