Abstract

Miniaturization of the electronic systems lead to novel and powerful thermal management technologies while making flow boiling heat transfer applications from enhanced surfaces more popular. Flow boiling is used widely for many applications from electronics cooling to automotive industry. It has been studied substantially by considering different parameters such as configuration, dimension, type of liquid, heat flux and morphology of the surface in order to improve boiling heat transfer performance. State-of-the-art boiling surfaces often improve the boiling performance by increasing bubble nucleation via change in roughness and/or wettability. In this sense, microchannels received significant attention and considered as one of the feebleness systems in the thermal management field. In this work, the effect of different engineered surfaces on flow boiling were investigated. These surfaces are prepared using sanding, boiling and pHEMA coating. Heat transfer coefficients were obtained as a function of mass flow rate and heat flux while visualization studies were also conducted. The potential of micro/nanoengineered surfaces for heat transfer enhancement and energy efficiency was revealed in the light of boiling images from these surfaces.
