Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the association between intergenerational education mobility and mothers’ intra-household bargaining power. To do so, the first six waves of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe are used and the analysis is conducted with the observations from 20 European countries and Israel. The results of the analysis where mother’s and father’s relative education level and relative predicted wage income are used as proxies to intra-household bargaining power indicate that an increase in mother’s intra-household bargaining power strengthens the association between mother’s years of education and the daughter’s educational outcome while the increase in maternal bargaining power weakens the dependency of educational outcome of daughter’s on paternal education. Even though the results of the estimation with main male sample reflect the existence of a similar pattern for sons, there is no evidence of a significant a ssociation between mother’s bargaining power and intergenerational education mobility for boys when the models are replicated for a subsample of sons.
